I’ve been a fan of VMV Hypoallergenics ever since I started using their Hydra Balance Smart Moisturizer. In the last quarter of 2013 they released their new line called 1635. They call it Gentleman’s Therapeutic Shaving in that each product heals and improves the overall condition of the skin. It is composed of seven products: a pre-shave scrub, a pre-shave barber oil, three shave creams for different beard types (fine, coarse and all), an aftershave balm, an anti-bump aftershave solution and an aftershave gel.
As with all VMV Hypoallergenics products the 1635 line is free of fragrances, dyes, pthalates, parabens, preservatives, SLS, SLES and allergens. They sent me all their products (but only one shaving cream) so I could sample them and give my thoughts. I tested the products using two different methods: individually with my current shaving products and by following the steps prescribed by the line.
I haven’t used a facial scrub in a long time so I was pleasantly surprised that this scrub doesn’t have as many and as coarse granules as other facial scrubs. This makes it gentle on the skin and can be used before every shave to remove debris and smooth skin for a close shave. The granules in this scrub are finely ground Arabica coffee beans known for their antioxidant properties.
Pre-Shave Barber Oil
A common problem I experience when shaving is when the razor doesn’t glide smoothly. This is because the skin isn’t properly moisturized and also leads to the caking of shaving cream. A pre-shave oil solves this dilemma by ensuring the skin is moisturized and thus a smooth razor glide. It is easily and quickly absorbed by the skin and mimics the warmth of a hot towel at a barbershop without the greasy feel.
Shave Cream No. 03 (All Beard Types)
I’m a traditionalist when it comes to shaving preferring shave creams that come in a tub rather than a tube. The distinct advantage that shaving creams in tubes have aside from convenience is that they do not produce as thick a lather and therefore can give a much closer shave. This shave cream delivers in that respect and it is accurate when they say that it is “sublimely smooth”. But the best thing about this shave cream is that it leaves a peppery-cool sensation. Definitely a great way to start the day.
Soothing Aftershave Salve
I know the feeling of razor-burn all too well. That burning sensation one experiences after shaving too close. It can actually be avoided by using fewer passes and a lighter hand. But sometimes it just happens and you need a product to alleviate the pain. This is the product that will do just that. It is a lightweight balm that is packed with moisturizers to heal and soothe skin yet does not leave a greasy feel behind. It’s also great for those with sensitive and dry skin.
Anti-Bump Aftershave Solution
It is recommended to shave with the grain (the direction the hair grows). But those who want to achieve a close shave know that the only way to do that is to shave across and against the grain. This can lead to ingrown hair and bumps that are not pleasant to look at. This solution helps prevent those ingrown hairs and bumps from becoming irritated or swollen.
In the entire line this is the product I like the most. This aftershave gel has a minimal amount of alcohol so it does not sting nor dry the skin. Like the shaving creams it too gives a peppery-cool sensation. It is packed with moisturizers and various ingredients that give it anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects. After applying skin feels soft, hydrated and refreshed.
VMV Hypoallergenics’ 1635 shaving line delivers on its promise of therapeutic shaving. Each product in the line targets a specific set of problems that all men experience when it comes to shaving. That makes it easy to add one, two or more products to an existing routine even for traditionalists like myself. In my case, that is the pre-shave soft scrub, pre-shave barber oil and aftershave gel. For those who want a step up yet want to keep it simple you can always start with the pre-shave soft scrub and shave cream then later on keep adding products as the need arises. VMV Hypoallergenics has indicated in the labels and packaging which product to use before and after so you’re never lost.
