I’ve bought a lot of shoes in the last few months but have not bought any additional shoe care products since my purchase of dubbin. I consider shoes as an investment and they should be cared for properly so they can be used for a long time.
The number one enemy of leather shoes is water. Water can destroy leather by removing its natural oils when it dries up. It can leave spots and marks that can be difficult to remove if not remedied immediately. In the long run it can cause leather to crack. Weekly applications of wax and dubbin can only do so much to keep leather in good condition so I considered buying a product that can give long term protection.
I was looking at various products and eventually decided to get Tarrago Protector. It is a spray that protects leather (including suede and nubuck) against rain and the spots it can leave behind. I have applied it to the uppers of leather shoes and also the leather soles. It does not change the texture or look of the leathers.
It’s great at protecting the leather in the last few showers I have run into. However, it should be noted that it does not protect the entire shoe. If a shoe was not specifically made to be waterproof, water will still get in through the seams if they are exposed for a prolonged period of time.
If you walk a lot and end up exposing your shoes to the elements get a can of Tarrago Protector. I estimate a single can will last about two years. Spraying your shoes every six months or right before the rainy season will ensure they’re ready to face what’s out there. Your shoes will love you for it and they’ll love you back for a long time.
Tarrago Protector is available at Heel Sew Quik at the Basement of SM Megamall. They have a great lineup of shoe care products (e.g. Meltonian shoe creams, Lexol leather conditioner) that I can’t seem to find anywhere else.
