Living in the city can be harsh on the face. There’s the pollution, occasional exposure to the sun, Arctic-level air-conditioning, and of course, alcohol consumption. All this can lead to the accumulation of dirt, sun damage and dryness that will make the face look tired. Here’s my advice for taking care of the face based on what I personally use and do.
After all these years I still use a tea tree oil facial wash. Tea tree oil is extremely effective at keeping blemishes from appearing but can be a bit harsh on the skin even if labeled for your skin type. Use twice a day to ensure the face is always clean. I recommend Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash – Original.
When I started using a face scrub it was mainly for preparing the skin for a shave. Now I use the same scrub all over my face to remove dead skin cells and smooth the skin. I shave about three times a week which is also about as often one should use a face scrub. I use VMV Hypoallergenic’s Pre-Shave Scrub from their 1635 shaving line.
I used to use VMV Hypoallergenic’s Hydra Balance Smart Moisturizer but now I swear by Laneige Homme’s Active Water Emulsion. Unlike creams its gel consistency penetrates deep into the skin to provide long-lasting moisture. It also contains enzymes to soothe irritated skin.
Use a sunscreen
A moisturiser with SPF doesn’t cut it anymore so I’ve switched to using a sunscreen. My choice is VMV Hypoallergenic’s Face Cover SPF 30 which offers full-spectrum protection in a light cream that’s perfect for the humid weather. SPF 30 is just the right amount of sun protection for everyday use and it protects the skin from both sunlight and indoor light.
Get a facial
If you take good care of your skin there’s no need to get a facial every month. Instead, get a facial every quarter just to remove all the dirt that’s stuck deep inside. Look for those that include those vitamin-filled gels or masks because they work wonders on the skin.
