I have always liked the look of Aviator sunglasses but I’m not happy with the brands available in the Philippines. I looked elsewhere and discovered Randolph Engineering, an eyewear manufacturer based in Randolph, Massachusetts, known for supplying the United States military. They won their first contract in 1977 and in 1982 became the prime contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense supplying all branches of the U.S. military. All their eyewear is manufactured in the U.S. to military specifications with each solder joint having a lifetime replacement guarantee.

I dislike wearing contact lenses so I decided to get an Aviator frame then add prescription lenses later. I chose gun metal for the frame color and bayonet temples. Bayonet temples are specially designed for use by military pilots as they are comfortable when worn under a helmet. The best part about this frame is the price: USD 115. It’s a great deal considering they are made in the U.S. to military specifications and battle tested over various tours of duty.

Now Randolph Engineering isn’t available in the Philippines so I had to purchase it through their online store based in the U.S. I used GCASH American Express Virtual Pay to pay and their partner My Shopping Box to ship my frame to the Philippines. This combination makes it easy and affordable to buy items in the U.S. that are cheaper or otherwise not available in the country. I placed my order and had it sent to My Shopping Box in California. I authorized the shipment and two weeks later my frame was delivered to my doorstep.

Randolph Engineering Aviator frames are thicker and slightly heavier making other brands seem flimsy and fragile. The heft combined with its distinct design exudes a kind of retro-masculinity not found in other similar looking frames. The bayonet temples are comfortable and hugs the face without feeling tight. In terms of fit it is designed to sit close to the face but the nose pads can be adjusted. Randolph Engineering frames deliver great value and are highly recommended for those looking for something different yet made with quality in mind.
